21. March 2014 | How laminate floors can make small rooms look bigger
Not many people complain about having too much space – and no wonder, because big rooms are easy to decorate. By comparison, designing small rooms so they don’t look even more cramped is a real challenge. Here we’ve compiled some useful tips for picking out colours, furniture and floors when you only have a few square metres of space to work with.
The following generally available rules for selecting colours and furniture produce good results:
- Light, cool colours on the walls make a room larger and more open. Light-blue, for example, makes walls visually recede. Furniture in the same colour amplifies this effect. Dark colours, in contrast, make a room lose depth.
- Low furniture makes a room look larger.
- Purist or minimalist decoration prevents a room from looking crowded. Too many decorative items quickly make it seem small and/or cluttered.
- Adequate light is very important. Having multiple light sources make a room look larger and defines accents. This effect is most pronounced with uplighter floor lamps. Indirect light is also excellently suited. Not recommended is having only a single ceiling lamp with a large shade.
- Functional, mobile furniture are real space savers.
- Properly placed mirrors can also help make a room look bigger. The ideal location is opposite a window.
It’s a lot harder to find advice on selecting floors. Yet the choice of floor also affects how a room’s size is perceived. Light-coloured, straight-lined laminate floors like the Cutter Oak and Veranda decors of our DYNAMIC series make a room seem larger. But the laminate should be a touch darker than the walls. Avoid small rugs and runners.
One great trick is to choose furniture with slender legs and feet, as they provide an unhindered view of the floor and thus also contribute to subjectively enlarging the room. If more floor is visible, this translates into a larger and airier effect. Furniture illuminated from underneath is especially striking, as it seems to float.
If you don’t want to do without a large seating ensemble, at least make sure it’s in the same colour as the floor. This creates the impression of a second level and avoids making the room seem overloaded.
If you have two or more fairly small rooms in your flat, it’s best to lay the same laminate décor across several rooms. This connects the small spaces and creates a larger overall impression.
The orientation of the panels also plays a role. It’s better to lay them parallel to the longer sides of a room, because this will seem to stretch it. Crosswise installation has the opposite effect, shortening the room instead. Intricate mosaic decors are to be avoided, because they divide the room up and make it shrink visually. Large plank decors, like those of the MAMMUT series, favourably impact a room’s size.
To ensure a good overall impression, it’s important for the wall colours, furniture, patterns and flooring to be harmoniously balanced. At the end of the day, however, anything you like is okay.
