21. January 2015 | Environmental and social awareness and responsibility as success drivers
We’ve been working with Werkhaus Design + Produktion GmbH for many years: we supply the company with wood-based materials and also use its products ourselves. This family-owned firm, based in the Lüneburg Heath in northern Germany, develops, produces, and sells practical office articles and furniture that are made from engineered wood boards using the proprietary Werkhaus connecting system. Now it has set a milestone by publishing the first sustainability report in the company’s over 20-year history.
Since its founding in 1992, Werkhaus has impressively demonstrated that it is possible to combine eco-friendly production, social responsibility and ambitious designs in products for the mass market as well. We are happy about the firm’s success and congratulate its owners and employees on their achievements.
The Werkhaus connecting system uses rubber rings to join made-to-measure fibreboard parts, making it easy to assemble them into photo stools (stools decorated with photographs), sales displays or note paper boxes. The product portfolio extends from practical office storage systems, home accessories and gift articles across toys to book displays. We are quite fond of using the displays, for example, to show off our KRONOTEX laminate floors. The note paper boxes also adorn a fair number of desks in our offices.
The intelligent connecting system, for which Werkhaus has received multiple awards, has the added advantage of minimising packaging and the size of shipments. The products are very simple to assemble or take apart again and conveniently stow. The firm’s customers include the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Eurovision Song Contest.
Werkhaus obtains its most important raw materials – MDF and HDF boards – from KRONOPLY, amongst other sources. The company insists on environmentally friendly materials whose sustainability is documented by corresponding certificates and data sheets. Werkhaus also attaches great importance to energy efficiency, minimising transport distances, reusing scrap, keeping emissions as low as possible and conserving nature. In addition, the firm is characterised by a keen sense of social responsibility that is reflected in its personnel policies. It currently has nearly 180 employees hailing from eight nations, around 15 percent of which are physically or mentally handicapped. Flexible working hours allow staff to coordinate work with their personal lives.
In many respects, we think and act very similarly to Werkhaus. We’re enthusiastic not only about the company’s products, but also about its uncomplicated yet professional approach to work, its active environmental consciousness and its constant striving to continue improving its sustainability at all levels.
